Concussion Information

A concussion is an injury to the brain caused by either of the following:

·      A direct blow to the head

·      A blow to another part of the body where the force is transmitted to the head

Concussion symptoms can vary from mild to severe and most occur without loss of consciousness. All concussions are potentially serious and may result in complications including prolonged brain damage and death if not managed properly. If you, your coach, or you parent think you may have sustained a concussion, please see the athletic trainer or your medical provider promptly.

California Interscholastic Federation Bylaw 313 states:

“A student-athlete who is suspected of sustaining a concussion or head injury in a practice or game shall be removed from competition at that time and for the remainder of the day.”

                                                                                                 and

“A student-athlete who has been removed may not return to play until the athlete is evaluated by a licensed heath care provider* trained in the evaluation and management of concussion and received written clearance to return to play from that health care provider”.

*As determined by the California Interscholastic Federation, a "licensed health care provider" includes a medical doctor or doctor of osteopathic medicine.
